Genesis 10:15-19

Context

10:15 Canaan was the father of 1  Sidon his firstborn, 2  Heth, 3  10:16 the Jebusites, 4  Amorites, 5  Girgashites, 6  10:17 Hivites, 7  Arkites, 8  Sinites, 9  10:18 Arvadites, 10  Zemarites, 11  and Hamathites. 12  Eventually the families of the Canaanites were scattered 10:19 and the borders of Canaan extended 13  from Sidon 14  all the way to 15  Gerar as far as Gaza, and all the way to 16  Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

Numbers 34:2-14

Context
34:2 “Give these instructions 17  to the Israelites, and tell them: ‘When you enter Canaan, the land that has been assigned to you as an inheritance, 18  the land of Canaan with its borders, 34:3 your southern border 19  will extend from the wilderness of Zin along the Edomite border, and your southern border will run eastward to the extremity of the Salt Sea, 34:4 and then the border will turn from the south to the Scorpion Ascent, 20  continue to Zin, and then its direction 21  will be from the south to Kadesh Barnea. Then it will go to Hazar Addar and pass over to Azmon. 34:5 There the border will turn from Azmon to the Brook of Egypt, and then its direction is to the sea. 22

The Western Border of the Land

34:6 “‘And for a western border 23  you will have the Great Sea. 24  This will be your western border.

The Northern Border of the Land

34:7 “‘And this will be your northern border: From the Great Sea you will draw a line to Mount Hor; 34:8 from Mount Hor you will draw a line to Lebo Hamath, 25  and the direction of the border will be to Zedad. 34:9 The border will continue to Ziphron, and its direction will be to Hazar Enan. This will be your northern border.

The Eastern Border of the Land

34:10 “‘For your eastern border you will draw a line from Hazar Enan to Shepham. 34:11 The border will run down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain, and the border will descend and reach the eastern side of the Sea of Chinnereth. 26  34:12 Then the border will continue down the Jordan River 27  and its direction will be to the Salt Sea. This will be your land by its borders that surround it.’”

34:13 Then Moses commanded the Israelites: “This is the land which you will inherit by lot, which the Lord has commanded to be given 28  to the nine and a half tribes, 34:14 because the tribe of the Reubenites by their families, 29  the tribe of the Gadites by their families, and half of the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance.

[10:15]  1 tn Heb “fathered.”

[10:15]  2 sn Sidon was the foremost city in Phoenicia; here Sidon may be the name of its founder.

[10:15]  3 tn Some see a reference to “Hittites” here (cf. NIV), but this seems unlikely. See the note on the phrase “sons of Heth” in Gen 23:3.

[10:16]  4 sn The Jebusites were the Canaanite inhabitants of ancient Jerusalem.

[10:16]  5 sn Here Amorites refers to smaller groups of Canaanite inhabitants of the mountainous regions of Palestine, rather than the large waves of Amurru, or western Semites, who migrated to the region.

[10:16]  6 sn The Girgashites are an otherwise unknown Canaanite tribe, though the name is possibly mentioned in Ugaritic texts (see G. J. Wenham, Genesis [WBC], 1:226).

[10:17]  7 sn The Hivites were Canaanite tribes of a Hurrian origin.

[10:17]  8 sn The Arkites lived in Arka, a city in Lebanon, north of Sidon.

[10:18]  11 sn The Zemarites lived in the town Sumur, north of Arka.

[10:18]  12 sn The Hamathites lived in Hamath on the Orontes River.

[34:8]  25 tn Or “to the entrance to Hamath.”

[34:11]  26 tn Or “the Sea of Galilee” (so NLT); NCV, TEV, CEV “Lake Galilee.”

[34:12]  27 tn The word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied in the translation for clarity.
